What is a hackathon?

A hackathon is an event in which different actors compete against each other. Participants can be experts from different fields of computer science, recent graduates in scientific subjects, PhD students or even students. It generally lasts between a day and a week, during which participants, divided into teams, will have to carry out a project in competition with everyone else.

The term “hackathon” comes from the fusion of the words “hack”, meaning experimental and unstructured programming, and “marathon,” marathon. The origin of the name explains the two main characteristics of this event: the computer science field in which it was born, and endurance, understood as dedication to achieving the goal.

The first event with this name was the OpenBSD Hackathon in Calgary, Canada, on June 4, 1999. Also in 1999, at JavaOne’s annual conference, Englishman John Gage issued a challenge to create a program related to the Palm V handheld: the event was christened “The Hackathon.”

From there on, this type of event multiplied and spread all over the world, in different forms and with different characteristics: in the 2000s, hackathons became occasions promoted by different organizations for the development of new projects and the creation of new synergies.

What is the purpose of a hackathon?

The purpose of a hackathon is to create opportunities, using unconventional ways: in some cases, it can encourage innovation in a specific technology sector or even in a specific service. More and more often, in fact, small and large companies are organizing these events to be able to reach innovative solutions that they would not otherwise be able to find.

Other types of opportunities are created by providing an environment in which people with different skills collaborate face-to-face on a specific project that affects everyone equally, fostering relationships among participants that might not otherwise have been created. These kinds of connections can become fertile ground for the birth of projects and ideas that would never have seen the light of day otherwise.

The projects that are realized during hackathons, then, are never an end in themselves: in fact, these survive the event and can be the basis for ideas, collaborations and teams, which can become the first cores of future start-ups or innovative ideas!

Tondo’s hackathon

Over the years Tondo has organized several hackathons, very different in size, challenge, and context: the only thing these events had in common was the theme of circular economy.

is the case of Hacking the city, a format that Tondo repeated in 2021 and 2023: this is the first Italian hackathon entirely dedicated to circular cities. Organized in online mode and then in hybrid mode, it was designed to bring to life and concretize projects that would foster the implementation of the Circular Economy in cities, involving students, recent graduates and doctoral students. Key partners included A2A, Lavazza, Salvatore Ferragamo, Iren, Esselunga, Cisco and many others.

Tondo has also chosen to bring the hackathon format within larger events, such as the various editions of Re-think – Circular Economy Forum: in several editions, such as the one currently being organized, Tondo proposed a hackathon aimed at local students that could enrich the experience.

In addition, Tondo has collaborated with external entities by bringing his experience in organizing hackathons: a recent case in point was the CLOCKS project, in the context of the Circular Summer School in Padua. Held in July 2023, the hackathon integrated and enriched the Summer School program by involving companies such as Barilla and Albini to implement circular projects.

Un hackathon è un evento all’interno del quale diversi attori si sfidano in una competizione. I partecipanti possono essere esperti di diversi settori dell’informatica, neolaureati in materie scientifiche, dottorandi o anche studenti. Generalmente ha una durata variabile tra un giorno e una settimana, durante la quale ai partecipanti, divisi in team, dovranno realizzare un progetto in competizione con tutti gli altri.

II termine “hackathon” viene dalla fusione delle parole hack, intesa come programmazione sperimentale e destrutturata, e “marathon”, maratona. L’origine del nome spiega le due principali caratteristiche di questo evento: l’ambito informatico in cui nasce, e la resistenza, intesa come dedizione al raggiungimento dell’obiettivo.

Il primo evento con questo nome è stato l’OpenBSD Hackathon a Calgary, in Canada, il 4 giugno 1999. Sempre nel 1999, alla conferenza annuale di JavaOne, l’inglese John Gage ha lanciato una sfida per la creazione di un programma relativo al palmare Palm V: l’evento è stato battezzato “L’Hackathon”.

Da lì in poi questa tipologia di evento si è moltiplicata e diffusa in tutto il mondo, in diverse forme e con diverse caratteristiche: negli anni duemila gli hackathon sono diventate occasioni promosse da diverse organizzazioni per lo sviluppo di nuovi progetti e la creazione di nuove sinergie.

Qual è lo scopo di un hackathon?

Lo scopo di un hackathon è creare opportunità, usando strade non convenzionali: in alcuni casi può incoraggiare l’innovazione in uno specifico settore tecnologico – o addirittura in un specifico servizio. Sempre più spesso infatti piccole e grandi aziende organizzano questi eventi per riuscire ad raggiungere soluzioni innovative che non riuscirebbero a trovare diversamente.

Altri tipi di opportunità si creano offrendo un ambiente in cui persone con competenze diverse collaborano faccia a faccia su un progetto specifico che interessa tutti allo stesso modo, favorendo relazioni tra i partecipanti che altrimenti non si sarebbero potute creare. Questo tipo di connessioni possono diventare terreno fertile per la nascita di progetti e idee che non avrebbero mai visto la luce altrimenti.

I progetti che vengono realizzati durante gli hackathon, poi, non sono mai fini a se stessi: questi infatti sopravvivono all’evento e possono essere la base per idee, collaborazioni e teams, che possono diventare i primi nuclei di future start-up o idee innovative!

Gli hackathon di Tondo

Nel corso degli anni Tondo ha organizzato diversi hackathon, molto diversi tra loro per dimensioni, challenge e contesto: l’unica cosa che questi eventi avevano in comune era il tema dell’economia circolare.

è il caso di Hacking the city, un format che Tondo ha ripetuto nel 2021 e nel 2023: si tratta del primo hackathon italiano interamente dedicato alle città circolari. Organizzato in modalità online e poi in modalità ibrida, è stato pensato per far nascere e concretizzare progettualità che favorissero l’implementazione dell’Economia Circolare nelle città, coinvolgendo studenti, neolaureati e dottorandi. Tra i partner principali ci sono stati A2A, Lavazza, Salvatore Ferragamo, Iren, Esselunga, Cisco e tanti altri.

Tondo ha anche scelto di portare il format degli hackathon all’interno di eventi più ampi, come le diverse edizioni di Re-think – Circular Economy Forum: in diverse edizioni, come in quella che si sta organizzando attualmente, Tondo ha proposto un hackathon rivolto a studenti del posto che potesse arricchire l’esperienza.

Inoltre, Tondo ha collaborato con realtà esterne portando la sua esperienza in ambito di organizzazione di hackathon: un caso recente è stato il progetto CLOCKS, nel contesto della Circular Summer School di Padova. Svoltosi a luglio 2023, l’hackathon ha integrato e arricchito il programma della Summer School coinvolgendo aziende come Barilla e Albini per l’implementazione di progetti circolari.
